once you have a definition of fat, answer to your question comes up immediately.

Some are. The majority are not. In fact one of my Chinese friends was so shocked at the obesity epidemic in Canada/US that she regularly uploads pics of fat Americans/Canadians to her WeChat to show her friends. How shocked must they be…

I first visited China as a young man in the early nineties. At 5′11″ people uniformly asked me whether I played basketball (I appear taller than I really am because I’m a bit underweight). The same was true in Taiwan. I towered over most people. There were no obese people other than a few of the elderly and maybe the lone chubby kid. Food choices were limited by western standards but people had bought to eat.

When I visited around 2000, the young people were definitely growing taller but I still stood out. A few people were overweight. Western foods and restaurants were quickly establishing a foothold in the large cities.

During my visits in the last few years, my height was not unusual among people in their 20s. I was still considered tall but not out of the norm. The increase in the number of obese people was apparent but nothing that approaches the US.

I suspect the change is due to more nutritious and higher calorie (more Western) diets. KFC, McDonald’s and Starbucks are ubiquitous. More people own cars and walk less. More people work in offices vs manual labor.

In conclusion the Chinese are getting fatter and taller but not fat or tall by US standards. Welcome to the free Market with its riches and pitfalls.

Bread is one of the worst foods for making you fat. Chinese don’t eat bread. They eat rice instead. Having said that many Chinese are not in good shape meaning they never exercise. Exercise to a Chinese is a walk around the block. Exercise to any other person means going to the gym and doing some really hard muscle development.

If Chinese people are generally fat, Americans would be generally obese.

Some of them are, especially overseas Chinese as I personally know some fat Chinese. Chinese are not usually fat, most of them are quite skinny or slim as to compared to Westerners. Chinese are not known to being fat, so find a fat Chinese is not a norm to many Chinese.

Well, I don’t think so. but again they have different standards.

This is me, 161cm 55kg (5′3 and 121pounds).

I feel I’m in average size when I’m in Ghana or France, but I’m considered fat by Chinese standards. The ideal weight is 45–50kg (99–110pounds) for my height. So I started to work out and eat less preparing for my trip back to China in 7 months.

It is a hard question to answer.

1st who are Chinese people? The people in China or also include overseas Chinese?

2nd what is fat? Overweight /obese or just looked chubby?

Okay, so now, assuming Chinese are people in China and overseas as long as they have Chinese origin. I will answer based on my subjective observation of my Indonesian Chinese friends and mainland China friends.

I should say in Indonesia (Jakarta), there are more chubby/overweight Chinese compared to in China (Beijing and Shanghai). In fact, the first thing I noticed when came to China is I’ve almost never seen obese person.

Why? I think it’s because in China although the portion of one meal is bigger, people do more physical activity such as walking and cycling, daily. In Jakarta, Indonesia, people moves by motorcycle and car.

About fat looking, maybe it’s because of the face? Several people do have chubby look, it’s genetic.
